How well off would a family be in 1890 if they had 4 servants?

I am researching my family tree and I have all the names, dates of birth, marriage, death etc and now I%26#039;m trying to build up a picture of the lives of my anscestors. My Great Grandfather was born in 1890 into a large Jewish family in South Hornsey, London in which were also living 4 of the families servants. His father, and head of the household, was a Jewish Boot and Shoe Manufacturer who emigrated from Poland in about 1830. Can anyone help me build up a picture of their lives? I%26#039;ve tried a web search on British Social nHistory but with out much success. (please...no links to genealogy sites - I have all the dates I need - I just want social/political history and lifestyle information)

I have a great - great uncle who upped sticks and left for Provo Utah. Then from there he moved to Pennsylvania, he was considered very wealthy because he employed two housemaids and a school teacher for the eight children he fathered. When he died in 1898 he left a fortune of 24;644 dollars, and was the owner of 14 properties.
Reply:Most middle class families would have had a servant back then but a family with 4 servants would have been pretty well off, I would think.
Reply:Would need to have been comfortably off.If he had 4 live in servants then he must have had dormitries(rooms)for them.Which means he owned the property the family lived in.As it%26#039;s doubtful if in London that jewish synogogues existed it is reasonable to assume he would have a place of worship in his home,or in another home close by.They would need the services of a Rabbi. They would need to contribute to the Rabbis%26#039; upkeep.Without knowing the duties of the 4 servants it%26#039;s reasonable to assume Butler/Valet,Housekeeper/Cook.Tutor and Scullery Maid. All of whom except would be on decent wages, except the Maid.Even with this live in staff he%26#039;d probably need at least 2 handmen, for repairs inside and outside the house, including painting. Also for gardening and garbage disposal.Overall the lighting, fuel, food, transport, clothes and medical requirements of the household would be immense. So your great grandad had to be comfortably rich
Reply:Probably a lot better than most.
Reply:PRetty well off
