My friend is having trouble with some raccoons. On Sat. she noticed 3 little ones in one of her oak trees, she asked me to find out a humane way to shoe them away? She wants to know if they are dangerous, she has three labrador retrievers and is afraid that they will get the raccoons or the raccoons will bite one of her dogs. Also she was wondering how in the future she can keep them away? Any answers will be greatly appreciated, She would like a HUMANE way to get rid of them, no use a bb gun... Thanks
Help with Raccoon problem?
Yes, raccoons can carry canine distemper.
The only humane way to remove them is live trapping and relocation. The problem is, you do not know how old the babies are, and if they are still nursing. Momma may have put them in the tree for the day, but they may still be traveling with her and nursing at night.
Since you need a license in order to live trap and/or relocate wildlife, I would suggest contacting a Nuisance Wildlife Control Professional. You can look for one here: http://www.wildlife-removal.com/faq.htm
They already have the necessary licenses. They can also estimate the age of the babies, and will know if it is necessary to keep them with momma. If so, they will check the surrounding area to find her and any other babies so they can keep the family together.
Please do NOT contact animal control. They destroy raccoons.
Reply:Your best bet would probably be to call your local animal control authorities. You don%26#039;t want to mess with trapping and releasing raccoons if they are rabid and a trained professional will be better at identifying a rabid one right off the bat.
Better safe than sorry.
Reply:well if the racoon bites the dog it might turn into cujo part 2 also is your freind teasing the racoons like cooking in the nude in front of them if so they will never go away
Reply:i heard if you shave up some irish spring an spread it in areas that the pests are near they will not go there again.
Reply:call the pest control people..they do things humanely and your problem is solved..
as for keeping them away....i guess you just have to watch out for leaving food in the yard...
Reply:Well Are their trash cans near her trees??? Maybe the mom raccoon put the babies close to where their was food available.
So she wouldn%26#039;t have to leave. What she can do is move the trash cans away (if their is any) so they won%26#039;t have access to the trash and maybe they will leave. If not then sorry!!!
Reply:get one of those traps, that when they go in and step on a lever, the door shuts, then take it out to a forest. but make sure to put bait in, and to check it every day so it doesnt suffer.
Reply:About 2 months ago, my wife and I woke up to the sound of high pitched crying, I went out and there was a tiny raccoon. I put it in a shoe box (it was storming out). We put it in a bigger box and kept it in the laundry room overnight. The next morning, we realized the mom was hit in front of our house. It took almost 3 weeks for the other ones to come out. Your friend needs to call the local Department of Natural Resources, your local sheriffs department can give you the number. the DNR will give you numbers to local wildlife rehabillitators in your area. They will come and get them. She needs to do this immediately. They may be orphaned and it is hard telling how long they have been without food and water.
Reply:Live traps are best. Let them go far away from your house when you catch them.

Your local conservation office may have some for you to borrow.
Reply:climb up da tree anda catch tem it is easy and yhey a=r nice ounce u get to noe them and a have any other probz hit me up
Reply:leave them alone unless one of the dogs starts to act crazy about it. the raccoons wont try to bite the dogs but your dogs might kill it. they might have rabies but just because an animal is wild doesn%26#039;t mean it does.
Reply:go to a pet store and ask if they have any traps and trap those raccons but if they don%26#039;t fall for that put anti freze in little cups and put it somewere the raccons go most or take a small gun and shoo them but i like the 1st idea lol =) hope this helps
Reply:absolutely they are dangerous, i was almost attacked by one as a child that had rabies, so you need to call a professional to get them out. do not try this yourself they may have rabies, just because they are small does not mean they won%26#039;t bite! they are wild animals, not pets. be careful and please call a pro!!
