From what i can remember this book had a title something like %26quot;fat green trees%26quot; in it (?) Had to do with an overwieght teenage girl that liked to daydream, that somehow woke up living in an ancient clan of people. At one point they asked her help in cutting off the finger of one of their members with her %26quot;knife%26quot; (a tool they had not invented) instead of the sharp rock they usually used. She had a dream of a broken egg and told one of the clan members, they considered it a bad omen. I cant remember anymore of the book other than before all of this happened to her, she dyed her shoes orange and they turned out %26quot;puce%26quot;. Anybody remember this middle school book?
Does anyone know the title of this young adults book?
You%26#039;re gonna laugh, but I think you%26#039;ve conflated *three* books here! The first, about the overweight girl, is probably %26quot;Dinah and the Green Fat Kingdom%26quot; by Isabelle Holland. The second one, with the girl traveling back to the primitive cave people%26#039;s time, %26quot;Saturday the Twelfth of October%26quot; by Norma Fox Mazer (loved that book!). The third, with the puce shoes, %26quot;Summer of the Swans%26quot; by Betsy Byars.
Have fun re-reading them all!
Reply:The Summer of the Swans, When Sara tries to dye her orange sneakers baby blue. %26quot;...Look at that. That is the worst color you have ever seen in your life. Admit it. %26quot;I admit it. %26quot;Well, you don%26#039;t have to admit it so quickly. They ought to put on the dye wrapper that orange cannot be dyed baby blue. %26quot;They do. %26quot;Well, they ought to put it in big letters. Look at those shoes. There must be a terrible name for that color.? %26quot;There is,%26quot; Mary said. %26quot;Puce.%26quot; %26quot;What?%26quot; %26quot;Puce.%26quot; %26quot;Mary Weick, you made that up.%26quot; %26quot;I did not. It really is a color.%26quot; %26quot;I have never heard a word that describes anything better. Puce. These must look like puce shoes.%26quot;
Reply:Saturday the Twelfth of October by Norma Fox Mazer is a similar story. About a girl who goes back in time to a clan, and she does have a knife with her which eventually causes one of the clan to commit murder, something that the peaceful primitive people hadnever experienced before, and she eats raw birds eggs in one part.
